About the Gulden Leeuw Gulden Leeuw is a classic three-masted topsail schooner, with square sails on her foremast, one of the world's largest such vessels. Built in 1937 with an ice-class steel hull and a deep sheer, she is an ocean-voyaging vessel, 227 feet long. Her fore & aft sail plan allows her to sail close to the wind, and she is swift off the wind with her square sails. Her masts tower 130 feet above the water.
Gulden Leeuw (Golden Lion) displays a classic yacht ambiance, with rich materials, a high standard of finish and many hand-crafted details. Her authentic 1930’s feel has been retained and restored. At the same time, she has been outfitted with modern navigation, communications and safety equipment, as well as electrical generators and an auxiliary engine.
Gulden Leeuw operates as a sail training ship, with a professional crew of well-trained and experienced sailors. Those booking passage as trainees are assigned to watch sections and work alongside the professional crew, taking part in all the regular operations of the ship. The sail training program empowers young trainees to fully use their initiative to a point where they learn to run every aspect of the ship by themselves. The opportunity to learn to sail a tall ship such as Gulden Leeuw on an ocean passage is a life-changing experience never to be forgotten.
