About the Vela Vela is a stately three-masted, gaff-rigged, square topsail schooner, with 8,500 square feet of canvas pulling when her 14 sails all are set. She fills a sailor's heart with joy.
Launched in 1988 in Whidbey Island, Washington, she served as a sail training and marine science education vessel (ex-Tole Mour) sailing in the Channel Islands of Southern California for many years. She is steel-hulled, stoutly built, and equipped with modern safety, navigation and communications equipment. Newly refitted for Caribbean service Vela boasts comfortable, well-appointed cabins and public spaces. She has two cozy solo cabins for single passengers.
In her new career Vela will sail the British Virgin Islands, the French West Indies, and further south in the Windward Islands, on six and twelve-night voyages. Sail Vela, and experience the kind of adventure that fills your soul, in 21st century comfort!
