About the Exy Johnson & Irving Johnson
The voyages of Captain Irving (1905-1991) and Electa ‘Exy’ (1909-2004) Johnson aboard Yankee are well known, especially their seven times around the world with youth crew. They were pioneers of sail training, inspiring generations of sailors, tall ships and sail training programs, notably the beautiful new square rigged Twin Brigantines...the Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson sailing with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute.
These unique brigantines are sail training ships engaged in hands-on sail training, not "passenger vessels." All aboard them are encouraged to participate in sailing the vessel. You'll learn to "hand, reef and steer" a traditional square rigger. The program includes safety orientation and square rig seamanship training in Terminology, Sail Handling, Helmsmanship, Sailing Ship Maneuvers, and Square Rig Sail Theory and Trim.
Participants will be split into watches and become an integral part of the crew – helping to steer, navigate and sail the vessel, and pitch in with general ship’s chores. Individual instruction in marlinspike seamanship will be provided to interested participants.
