About the Harvey Gamage Experience hands-on sailing adventure aboard Harvey Gamage.
This traditional two-masted gaff-rigged schooner was built of wood in the Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine, and launched in 1973. Since a major refit in 2016, she has been engaged in sail training up and down the East Coast of the United States and into the Caribbean. As a member of Tall Ships America, she and her crew teach tall ship sailing to the youthful of all ages.
Accommodations are basic, with berths in a large berthing compartment, each with privacy curtains and a reading lamp. Heads and showers are shared.
Trainees are not simply passengers during their time aboard Harvey Gamage. You will be active crew members. Trainees live aboard and work side-by-side with professional crew to learn seamanship, sail handling and leadership – confidently hauling lines and steering the ship by the end of the voyage. Shipboard duties are shared by all.
Seeing land from sea and spending the night at sea changes perspectives. Through team building, structured schedules and a focus on active participation our voyages provide an opportunity for trainees to discover aspects of themselves, their co-trainees and the sea that they may not have thought possible – all from the unique perspective of a Tall Ship and with a commitment to responsible stewardship of these marine environments.
