Vessel Details - Tenacious

About the Tenacious
Tenacious is a three-masted barque, fully accessible to the disabled, belonging to Jubilee Sailing Trust, a unique English charity that aims to promote the integration of people of all physical abilities through the challenge and adventure of tall ship sailing. The JST owns and operates two tall ships, the only two vessels in the world that have been purpose-designed and built to enable a crew of mixed physical abilities to sail side by side on equal terms.Tenacious and her sister ship have taken more than 28,000 people to sea. Of these more than 11,000 were physically disabled and 4,200 were wheelchair users.

Tenacious' many facilities enable disabled crew to perform their duties independently alongside their able-bodied shipmates. The ship has access throughout for disabled crew, including wheelchair users, with flat wide decks and powered lifts. There is a speaking compass for the use of blind crew members, signs in Braille, and bright track radar for partially sighted crew. An induction loop and vibrator alarms have been installed for hard of hearing crew members.

There are special cabins, toilets and shower facilities for disabled crew and the ship is fitted with a mess deck, fully equipped galley, workshop and of course, a well stocked bar and saloon area. The permanent crew of 10 includes a medical purser and cook. Doctors wishing to sail as part of the voyage crew are offered a 50% discount.

There are no 'passengers' on Tenacious; everyone takes an active role in the crewing of the ship. Your role will include steering the ship, helping to set sails, assisting with onboard cleaning during 'happy hour' and helping the cook in the galley. You will have your own bunk to sleep in, as well as a locker for your personal belongings. Each ship has up to 40 voyage crew, and you will be divided into four watches, each taking turns throughout the day and night to be in charge of the ship's progress.

Everyone sailing as voyage crew becomes a 'buddy' to another crew member; the buddy system is the means by which able-bodied people assist their less able-bodied shipmates on board. Crew with more severe disabilities are encouraged to bring their own buddy, as they understand that individual's needs
