Each week Schooner Mary Day sets sail from Camden for a week of poking about among the bays and islands of mid-coast Maine. The region's many offshore islands and inside passages offer a wonderful variety of adventures as well as the choice of sailing in the shelter of the islands or on the broad ocean, depending on weather and sea conditions. We make every effort to stay off the beaten path, visiting islands and out of the way places on the mainland. We do our best to get off the boat to explore ashore each day. To a great extent, our itinerary is determined by the wind - it takes us where it's blowing but we always anchor for the night in a snug harbor, whether at an offshore island, salty downeast village, or larger seaside resort.
The Wooden Boat Course is a hands-on and physically active course. There will be a watch system set-up with responsibilities to manage all aspects of running a vessel of this size. The goal for the end of the week is to have the students working together to assume the operation of the vessel. Veteran Wooden Boat instructor Jane Ahlfeld will join with the crew of the Mary Day to be your instructors for this course. They have organized Watch stations which will include: Navigation, Bow, Marlinspike Skills, and Galley to guide you through the workings of the vessel and teach you the skills required to run the ship. There will also be plenty of time to relax and get ashore as usual.
At the center of Maine's mid-coast region, nestles a sheltered harbor, hemmed snugly in by steep but gently sloping mountains. Camden offers the excitement of a busy harbor with lots of yachts, pleasure boats and coastal schooners, as well as shopping, excellent dining, and varied entertainment, including art galleries and theater. During the sun filled down-east daytime, enjoy tours of the bay’s landmarks, from seal spotting, to working boatyards and lobster boats, to magnificant summer homes.
