Maio, Cape Verde
Maio is the easternmost of the Sotavento islands of Cape Verde. Maio is located south of the island of Boa Vista and east of Santiago. The island is known for its sandy beaches and large forest- which is unusual for Cape Verde. The tallest mountain on the island is approximately 1,400 feet and is on the east coast in a mountain range called Monte Penoso. Population is approximately 8,000.

The island was named Maio (Portuguese for "May") after its first siting on May 1, 1460. The economy at the time was salt collecting in its earlier days of colonialism with a little farming. Today, the economy is heavily supported by migrants who send money to their families on the island. Some local food consists of a variety of fish caught off the shores. Tourism is slowly being developed.
